About Rovaniemi


Rovaniemi, the capital of the Province of Lapland, is located in the Arctic Circle, close to National Road 4 and the railway to Kemijärvi. The amount of passengers passing through Rovaniemi Airport is the fourth-highest in the country. Rovaniemi is a significant regional centre in the Province of Lapland and is the area’s centre for business, trade, education and administration. A total of 31% of Finnish Lapland’s population lives here.

The administrative zone of the city of Rovaniemi, at approx. 8,000 km² is the largest in the EU. The population of this area is 60,000. The average age of the population is younger and the educational level is higher than the average in the rest of Lapland. Approximately 11,000 students live in Rovaniemi, making up 18% of the city’s population.

Rovaniemi is a dynamic and growing city, with a diverse, strong business structure. Rovaniemi is the logistical hub of Northern Finland and is a route to the markets of Northern Europe and Northwest Russia.

Municipal Administration and Business Promotion

Rovaniemi is led by a mayor and two vice mayors. The political direction is given by the city council and City Board.
Business responsibilities are divided as follows:

  1. Rovaniemi City has the overall responsibility for the economy in Rovaniemi. In addition to the Mayor and vice Mayors, the Director of business development as well as Director of Tourism & Travel are have an important role in economic policy.
  2. Rovaniemi Regional Development Agency Ltd is responsible for business development. The city sets the overall targets, but the Development Agency implements them by closely interacting with the local companies.
