Business Opportunities in Cold Testing
Lapland offers the best conditions and arctic climate for testing cars, tyres, studs and components in winter conditions.
Rovaniemi, located on the Arctic Circle, has a major cold testing cluster
and constitutes a centre for arctic know-how.
This is due not only to climatic factors but also to very deliberate work aiming to strengthen the position of Rovaniemi in the field of arctic knowledge. The capital of Lapland provides a steady stream of highly-qualified employees graduate from the several educational establishments, including two universities.
Complete package of services:
test-tracks, a cold laboratory and academic competence. Rovaniemi is also home to internationally competitive competence clusters in engineering and ICT and hosts manufacturing companies with global activities. The home country of Nokia offers all high-tech needed by the most demanding testing companies. Canadian
Bombardier
is a strong reference: all its European manufacturing and testing of snowmobiles is located in Rovaniemi. In addition,
Ford
decided in 2009 to establish a new winter testing centre in Rovaniemi. During winter about 200 employees of Ford and its subcontractors visit Rovaniemi.
Excellent logistic connections
to the entire Barents region and via Helsinki to all major capitals in the world. The city has an international airport that has a number of daily scheduled flights travelling via Helsinki. A large airspace capacity and a location along international flight paths make Rovaniemi airport a popular hub for freight transportation. An electrified railway and the European E 75 Highway running from North to South offer alternative forms of travel.
As a tourism centre, there is ample accommodation capacity, meeting venues and free-time possibilities
.
The fact that Rovaniemi is a top tourist destination for foreign visitors – only preceded in Finland by Helsinki – helps to create critical mass for a wide array of services. With 60,000 inhabitants, Rovaniemi is clearly the biggest centre of Lapland. Actually, the land area of 8,016 km² makes it the largest city in the European Union.
