Barents Business Hub

Rovaniemi as a Regional Basis

Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland and commercial centre to a wide region in the north.
The city is located on the Arctic Circle 800 km north of Helsinki. It has about 60,000 inhabitants and a land area of 8,016 km² making it the largest city in the EU. With a growing population Rovaniemi ensures a steady stream of highly-qualified employees graduating from the several educational establishments, including two universities

Thanks to a booming regional market, companies located in Rovaniemi are well placed to benefit from the investment boom in neighbouring areas in the proximity to the Barents Sea. Substantial investments and development schemes in Finnish Lapland and the northern regions of Sweden, Norway and Russia provide outstanding opportunities. Lapland’s investment pipeline for 2007-2015 is approximately € 3.75 billion and for the whole Barents Region it is many times this figure.

Growth sectors in the Barents region include in particular:

  1. Mining
  2. Energy
  3. Tourism
Excellent logistic connections to the Barents region and Central Europe and a central location in the middle of Lapland. The city has an international airport that has a number of daily scheduled flights travelling via Helsinki around the world. A large airspace capacity and a location along international flight paths make Rovaniemi airport a popular hub for freight transportation. An electrified railway and the European E 75 Highway running from North to South offer alternative forms of travel.

The city is home to manufacturing companies with global activities: both Finnish (e.g. playground manufacturer Lappset) and foreign (e.g. BRP). There are internationally competitive competence clusters in engineering, environmental know-how and ICT, which make Rovaniemi a preferred location to reach the booming markets of northernmost parts of Europe.
